Coptic binding

You can talk about real binding only in reference to works made from the fourth century AD, when the book took the form of codex, that is just a set of sheets, generally still on papyrus or parchment, folded, sewn and protected by a outer cover. Recall that before this time the documents were written on the roll and then stored in special carrier rolls. The oldest ties developed in the Egyptian area, covered with leather on wooden boards. The records and the cover were held together by a chain called “Coptic point”, named after the Coptic Christian community that was using this technique.
The signature book “The knot of Solomon” that you see in this picture, was made using the Coptic binding. Back exposed highlights the chain that links the files and the wooden cover.
